Transcript. Episode 101: What is Metaphysical Humanism and How Can it Help Me?
Hello friends and listeners. I want to start by asking you a question.
Have you ever had an experience that you couldn’t explain – like a dream you had that came true or maybe a a premonition. Or have you ever met someone and sensed very strongly that they had bad intentions and then later you found out they did have bad intentions, but you have no idea how you knew. Or have you ever known something was about to happen just before it happened, and you were able to take action to stop someone from being hurt?
These are things that can’t be explained. We call them supernatural events, psychic ability, intuition, or even that our angels or god gave us the message.
Well, there is a scientific term for these events. They are called METAPHYSICAL events. And that’s what we are going to talk about today.
But before we dive in further – let me say that I am so happy you stopped by today and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to you. If we haven’t met, I am Dr. Genie Mathews. My doctorate is a non-traditional religious degree in Metaphysical Humanism. I also have a bachelor’s degree in history and a nontraditional master’s degree in spiritual counseling with my ministerial credential. I have been working in the metaphysical field for a long time. I didn’t start out as a philosopher, however. I began working with angel energy and crystals and essential oils. Eventually I found that, for me, working with human consciousness was the best way to heal myself and to coach others.
And in this series I am going to share what I know about Metaphysics and the connection to human consciousness. This is Metaphysical Humanistic Science.
So, you might be wondering about my religion, metaphysical humanism. I get these questions a lot – Is it new age thing or witchy woo woo? Is it really a religion? Is it legitimate science and philosophy?
My answer is that it is all of that and more.
Interestingly, as a religion, I am an all faiths and a no faiths sort of minister. I practice no dogma, everyone is welcome, I don’t build houses of worship or recruit members, and the principles of my beliefs are few and are rooted in spiritual concepts found across the world and across time and across religious and spiritual systems. My role as a minister is to teach these principles and promote harmony in humanity.
1. Know yourself.
2. Be responsible for yourself.
3. Honor and respect free-will.
4. Choose Love.
5. Become Self-Actualized.
In a nutshell, that is my religion – and actually, I would say it’s a spiritual philosophy more than a religion. And over the next few episodes I will dive deeper into these 5 principles.
But today, let’s Define Metaphysics and Metaphysical Humanism so we’re all on the same page:
Meta – is a word that means beyond
Physics, of course, relates to the laws of the physical universe.
Together, the word means beyond the laws of the physical universe – or, rather, metaphysics deals with the invisible workings of the universe. There is some power out there that we are interacting with but that we can’t see or prove exists.
Some call this god. Some call it energy or dark matter. Some say it’s a spiritual realm where souls return. Some just call it the creator source. I call it collective consciousness. While still others say it’s just nature we can’t yet prove.
We know it’s there from our own subjective personal experience and belief in the experience of others. It’s some kind of inner knowing. You know it’s true. You just don’t know how you know.
There are a million different ideas of what exactly metaphysics looks like – magic, like dr. strange – or psychic ability – paranormal events – energy vibration – dark matter in the universe – creator gods – angels – aliens – spirits – other dimensions – or, what I mostly work with – consciousness.
Which is it? Well, we have to assume it’s all of that, except maybe the dr. strange stuff, but then again, who knows. We can’t see it. We can only observe our own experience and beliefs. And for now, all of those things, with our current level of knowledge and understanding, are metaphysics.
You might also be wondering, is it not contradictory to be a spiritual humanist? Isn’t humanism the belief in human ability while abandoning the idea of a higher power helping out?
Humanism is defined an outlook or system of thought attaching prime importance to humans rather than divine or supernatural matters. Humanist beliefs stress the potential value and goodness of human beings, emphasize common human needs, and seek solely rational ways of solving human problems.
That would seem to make metaphysical humanism contradictory.
For some people, humanism is an atheist way of viewing the world where no higher power than nature exists.
Metaphysics is a science that we just can’t see and prove YET- just as we didn’t know quantum science existed 100 years ago. Humanists definitely believe in science and that humans can solve their problems through science.
Humanists can scientifically consider the possibilities of there being invisible laws of the universe – or what some of us have called spirituality.
That is metaphysical humanism
Metaphysical Humanism is foundational to religion as well – in fact, all religions with a belief in a god and spiritual beings is a metaphysical belief system. Though most religions believe humans need a higher being to help them, still, they teach that humans can rise to their challenges through the lessons in the holy books. That’s absolutely Metaphysical Humanism.
So, whether you believe that humans control their own fates, or that God guides the way, in the end, both are philosophies (theologies) on who we are, how we got here, and why we are here.
Humans are always seeking the answers to who we are, how we got here, and why we are here.
However, these are existential questions have never definitively been answered with science or history or philosophy or religion, because they are based on our own subjective personal experiences and, again, what we believe have been the experiences of others. Our holy books and history books are the experiences of others.
And without answers we seek to control our lives through many metaphysical practices. We do good works in our community to hope for good Karma. Or we lift our vibes with crystals. We do work on shifting our thoughts or we meditate. We self-medicate with sacred plant medicine taking psychedelic journeys. We seek out others to tell us our future. We pray to god for our needs to be taken care of. We sit in women’s circle and set our intentions. We cast spells for luck or healing.
We can’t prove how any of these practices work – nor can we see it working. We can only see the results of our efforts – we feel happier and look happier, we are healed of a sickness, we accomplish a difficult task, or we “manifest” the money we need for a debt.
This is how scientist study quantum mechanics – they can’t see the particles and waves – but they can see the results of their tests.
Metaphysics is another science that we don’t yet have the knowledge or capability to fully see or understand.
For example:
We know there are medical cases where someone recovered from an illness that were not supposed to heal. They were near death and there was nothing that doctors could do. But after they adopted a certain mindset or spiritual practice or they had an entire church praying for them, they made a recovery. Some call this miracle, others call it placebo effect, and still others call it coincidence. No one knows how it works; doctors can’t explain it. So, we can’t say for sure how it works except that the power of human potential is greater than we know.
Hear that again. The power of human potential is greater than we know.
The placebo effect is proof of the power of our minds. The placebo effect is where someone is not given medicine, but they believe they have been given medicine, and they have the results as if they had taken the medicine. This works because the mind believes you had the right medicine and are going to heal. It’s the mind that created healing.
We know our thoughts can make us sick – we call that psychosomatic illness. The mind can also make us well – psychosomatic wellness.
The potential of the human mind is far more powerful than we know.
And again, you can believe that is true because the human mind is linked to god, or the spirit realm, or guardian angels, or that there is healing energy that surrounds us all that we are connected to. It’s all true. Whatever you believe is the power that breathes life and health into you – it’s the truth.
This is metaphysical humanism.
Another example of metaphysical events that science is interest in but can’t explain are Near Death Experiences.
People tell stories of dying and they still saw things going on in an emergency room or surgery when they had no brain function or heartbeat at the time. They were dead and yet they have memory of what was happening. If our consciousness is still operating even if our brain is not functioning then near-death experiences have shown that consciousness may not be located in the physical brain. Consciousness may be beyond the physical body and therefore metaphysical.
I had an experience once with knowing something was about to happen and I saved a friend from a very catastrophic accident. We were at a softball game, and she was very pregnant at the time. And I got a vision in my mind of a foul ball flying towards us and for a moment I thought about how I could move her out of the way of the ball without hurting her. Not a minute later a ball came towards us, and I moved her out of the way exactly as I had envisioned – and it missed her. The ball would have hit her in the head – and it was a very hard fast ball coming our way. I don’t know where the vision came from, but I am thankful it came.
Many of us have experienced a Tarot or Oracle reading. I give oracle readings and am always amazed with the messages that come. I can’t tell you how it works except that when I draw the cards I listen to my still small voice to tell me when to draw the card. The message is always relevant to my clients. I can’t see or prove the existence of that voice of intuition, and I don’t know how it knows which cards to draw – it’s not logical or rational or physical – its beyond reason and testable science – it’s metaphysical.
Metaphysical Humanism is believing that humans can access these metaphysical energies that we don’t understand and use them to better humanity and the world.
And metaphysical humanistic science is the continued study and search for the ultimate truth that answers definitively – who are we, how did we get here, why are we here, and what is the invisible power that guides us.
The five principles I teach and will share over the next several episodes are simply ways for us to be the best humans we can be while continuing to study ourselves and increase our knowledge in the search for those answers.
Whatever you believe is the truth is your path to knowledge and answers. It’s your metaphysical path. And there are no wrong paths, just as there are no wrong questions.
And that friends is metaphysics and how it can help you.
