Episode 108: Metaphysical Humanism, Intrinsic Wisdom of Intuition

Episode 108 Transcript

Intrinsic Wisdom of Intuition

Hello friends and listeners.  I am happy to have you here for this series on Metaphysical Humanism.

In this second half of season 1, I am sharing about our innate human superpowers that Bob Proctor called the 6 Mental Faculties.  I call them our intrinsic wisdoms – gifts we are born with, and which, if we pay attention, we can hone them so they may serve us in becoming our highest selves. Our self-actualized SELF.

These 6 skills are: Imagination, Intuition, Will, Memory, Perception, and Reason.  They are part of our Metaphysical Human qualities and are vital to us achieving the principles and levels of growth I talked about in the first part of this season. They are metaphysical because they work with our consciousness – we can’t see these mental faculties at work – we can’t even prove they exist except through our own experience with them.

Today I want to talk about the mental faculty of Intuition.  Your gut feeling – that hunch you get but don’t know how you know – your inner advice voice that sometimes you listen to and sometimes you don’t and when you don’t you go “ugh! I should have listened to my gut instinct!”

We have all ignored that voice inside us and frequently paid a price for it – right?  We don’t trust that voice – and that’s because we don’t understand it.  Who is that voice?  Where is it coming from?  Why should I trust it?  Is it just my fear or anxiety popping up?  Am I just saying to myself what I want to hear? Intuition can be elusive unless we take the time to get to know it properly.

And even when we do understand intuition and believe it’s a connection to a higher energy – our ego can often still step in and talk us out of trusting that voice.

A few years ago, my husband and I were moving to a new town, and we were looking at buying a house – we found a townhouse that was priced in our budget and newly built.  It was modern and a clean slate for us to decorate and make our own.  We chose it because this town is an old rural and didn’t have many newly built homes – most houses were 50 to 100 years old, and we didn’t want to have to invest in repairs and renovations right away.   I wasn’t looking to put on a new roof or install a new furnace for a while.

Everything was going great with the closing and then we met the builder at the lawyers office to sign all the final paperwork. I was really excited to get the keys and move in.  I sat across the table from him.  And as we were signing documents I had the strongest feeling come over me – first, he wasn’t making eye contact with me – suspect behavior.  But my whole body was reacting and telling me something was wrong with the house and not to go through with the signing. I intuitively felt this man was keeping something from us.

But the other part of my consciousness, my ego,  was telling me it was too late.  Don’t back out – you’ll look like a psycho – they’ll be angry at you – they’ll tell you that you wasted their time!  You’ll look bad! Everything is under warranty and can be fixed.  It will be fine.

So I kept my mouth shut and signed the papers. And I lived to regret it.

And for the next two years we fought that builder to fix major issues with the house – as soon as we moved in and turned on the AC – the luxury vinyl flooring bowed up and we lived with hills in our floor and the builder refused to come look at the floor for three months. When they did come in we suddenly had 12 men in the house looking at the floor. The underfloor structure wasn’t level – there were so many problems with the floor! Eventually the entire floor and subfloor had to be ripped up and new flooring installed. But issues continued with the flooring.  Also, there was no drainage for the AC for the condensation dripping. It was going into a hole in the floor that didn’t drain out. The furnace didn’t work right because it was clogged with construction debris. The paint they used on kitchen cabinets began peeling almost immediately because it wasn’t sealed and the builder refused to tell us what kind of paint was used. Turns out the house was built as cheaply as possible. And that created lots of problems on top of the usual things that new houses deal with beyond nail pops and paint platters.  We had to fight for two years to get any of these things repaired – AND THEN – they turned the HOA over to a friend and she was determined not to allow homeowners to lodge complaints about the builder and refused to hold meetings so that nothing could be presented.  It was a daily struggle.  Ultimately, due to some nefarious biz practices, the builder had to file bankruptcy.

We sold the house as soon as we could and bought a 1972 solid built house that will still be standing when those townhouses fall apart. And we love our house.  Repairs and renovations and all.

But had I listened to my voice – we lost so much money on that townhouse with closing costs and decorating and moving in, then moving out – and we also lost two years of peace of mind – we had two years of constant stress.

…because I was worried the builder and the banker and the real estate agent and maybe even my husband would get mad at me and accuse me of wasting their time – I chose to ignore this human superpower intuition because I didn’t trust it.

Now, I’ve been studying these principles for 15 years – and still – and still – I silenced my inner voice.

It happens.

And you can imagine for people who don’t understand intuition or even know that they have a trustworthy inner voice – it happens to them all the time.  And it leads to bad decision making, it leads to missteps and not following your path and unwanted situations in your life.

So, let’s talk about it.

What is intuition?

Intuition is the ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning. It’s having the ability to know or understand things without any proof or evidence – you just know.

It’s called many things: instinct, inner-warning system, intuitiveness, sixth sense, divination, psychic ability, second sight, or even in the world of science it’s called subconscious mind recall.

Whatever you call it – you have it.  We all have it.  And we all have it perfectly.  No one has more or less intuitive potential.  No one was born with special intuitive gifts greater than any other person.

However, some people practice and connect with this ability more than others.  Some people TRUST this voice more than others. Some people tune in this voice, when others tune it out.

Albert Einstein said, “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift, and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”

Reason makes us doubt our intuition because sometimes what our inner voice advises us isn’t rational or reasonable – or makes any sense.  My inner voice telling me not to sign those papers didn’t make sense – it certainly would not have made sense to anyone else in the room – so I chose to be reasonable.  This was a business transaction – it was a moment that required reason – and yet, my entire body was trying to tell me “don’t do it.”

We have five physical senses – sight, touch, taste, hearing, smelling.  These senses inform us about the world around us.  They help us reason and understand what’s happening to us in our physical body and in the physical world.  Intuition is a sense that informs us about our internal, metaphysical body and the metaphysical energetic world outside of us. The self that thinks and makes decisions and feels energy and creates understanding and meaning – your consciousness.  Others can often experience the same physical senses you are experiencing – if there is a loud noise, others sense it with hearing.  It there is a bad odor, others can smell it too.

But the truth is that intuition is a solitary experience that’s just for you.  It is also maybe an even more important sense because it can come to your aid when all others seem to be silent. Physical senses don’t always pick up on the energy of a room or someone’s mood. Sometimes you can see someone is angry or sad, or sometimes you can hear the room full of laughter and those senses tell you the energy.  But not always.  But intuition will pick up energy because it is the sense that is most strongly connected to the realm of infinite consciousness, divine intelligence and awareness.  It’s connected directly to the energetic field.  It’s part of the energy field.

Yet it is also the most elusive of the six superpowers I am discussing in this series. As a result, it is often the least developed and least utilized of our superpowers.

That’s because we don’t understand our mind.  We have a conscious mind and a subconscious mind. The conscious mind has the ability to accept or reject information – to reason, think critically, be rational. It tells fact from fiction, a lie from the truth. The subconscious mind does not have that ability . This subconscious mind has no sense of humor. It can’t tell the difference between fact and fiction. It will accept anything you give to it, and it accepts what you give it as truth and reality.

This is why positive self-talk is so important – when you say something to yourself like “I’m fat” – even if you are just being factious your subconscious mind believes it and sets out to help you make decisions that prove it. Like, “hey, aren’t you hungry right now? You are just sitting here doing nothing, why not grab a snack?”  Likewise, if you say, I solved that problem today I am so smart intelligent – your subconscious mind believes that too – and its going to give you more opportunities to solve problems and be the hero.

Now I always think of the news channel, the main news people are giving the news story but theres a story scrolling underneath. Sometimes if we’re doing positive affirmations or mantras we are saying this positive thing but then underneath running this conversation that we don’t believe it.. I want to believe it…   Because you subconscious hears that too.   One way to get around that is to qualify statements with “up until now” –  Let’s say you have been a procrastinator.  Instead of saying “oh I’m so bad I’m a procrastinator” you say “up until now I have procrastinated” .  Or up until now I have not used my talents efficiently.  That is a different statement – a different message to your subconscious – I want to be different.  Your subconscious will help you not procrastinate. Or You’ve been looking for romance but haven’t found a long-term relationship.  Say “up until now I have not found anyone to be in a serious relationship.”  That says something different to your subconscious.

You conscious mind speaks to your subconscious – you think a thought or notice something, and it reports to the subconscious.  And that information gets stored and becomes part of your beliefs and paradigms that inform your opinions and habits and decisions, even if you aren’t aware that they do.

Your subconscious can also communicate with your conscious mind. We call that communication the voice of your intuition.  That’s how your subconscious talks to your conscious mind – and also through your paradigms, but those aren’t usually good. Intuition helps you get rid of limiting paradigms. In the world of academics and scientific study – both in neurology and psychology – intuition is said to be the result of information being recalled from you subconscious that you didn’t know you knew.  So first of all, YES!  Science is very interested in researching intuition – this isn’t just woo-woo, new age, hippy-dippy stuff that naysayers like to claim.  This is science.

For example, you get in a dangerous situation and something in you tells you how to survive – like a car is coming at you head on and you swerve just the right way at just the right time to avoid a collision – you never practiced that move – unless you are a stunt driver – but somehow you intuitively knew which way to turn to avoid catastrophe.  It’s possible you made that move in a video game, or imagined it, but most likely your survival mode kicked in and communicated with the divine intelligence realm and go you and immediate response.

Also, you might be talking to a friend about how to treat their child’s illness and you bring up a healing method to try – you don’t know how you knew this – maybe it was something you read or saw somewhere – or maybe something you were treated with as a child – you have no conscious memory of learning it and so it feels like the idea came out of thin air.

But this kind of intuition, for me, is more like “common sense” or even “ survival instinct.”  Its things that you picked up from your surroundings, lessons you learned as a young child – things that your subconscious stored but you didn’t know or even understand what you were taking in. Then later on you recall this information that seems to come out of the ethereal realm  – out of air – and it sort of does because its from your consciousness  – the energy field – not a physical part of your brain. The consciousness field is metaphysics.

Intuition is not knowledge from our physical senses– it’s a connection to the spiritual world– to the divine – to the ethereal realm – the energetic field – the collective consciousness… the holy Spirit or how you talk to god.  It’s your ability to communicate with the infinite intelligence. And this connection is made through the subconscious mind.  The conscious mind is ruled by rationality and ego.  Intuition comes in through our subconscious – then our subconscious speaks to our conscious mind with gut feelings, hunches, and the answer to your problem that seems to come out of thin air.  Some people are really good at interpreting these hunches and we say they have psychic ability – but know this – you have it too! You just need to learn to hear how your intuition speaks to you and how to interpret the message.  That just takes practice.

Yes, it can be a voice – a gentle voice.  It western religion it’s referred to as the “still, small voice.”

Gandhi said that intuition, which he called the voice for truth, speaks to every person on the planet every single day, but its voice is only as loud as our willingness to listen to it.  Sometimes that voice tells us something we know is right, but our ego steps in and says – oh you can’t do that.

And that is our main block to having easy access to this human superpower.  We don’t listen. We don’t get still.  We don’t slow down long enough to hear the divine trying to help us.

To access intuition and built your trust in that voice, you simply need to ask a question. Every question has an answer. The answer is within you – through your subconscious connection to this infinite intelligence.  And then you have to get still and listen for an answer.

And it may not come right away, like if you ask and then meditate the answer might not come up because you are expecting an answer and so with that expectation, comes ego which blocks intuition. It may come while you are driving down the road. It may come when you are in the shower.  It may come when you are washing dishes.  If you aren’t multitasking and listening to an audio book or Spotify.

Think of an A.I. search.  You type in your question and give all the parameters. Then hit the search button– do you get up and leave the computer or put your phone down before the search results come up?  Of course not!

Well, that’s what we tend to do when we are asking our higher power for help to solve a problem. We ask then walk away from the answer.  OR we argue with the answer – that’s not reasonable – that’s not rational, that sounds crazy, I can’t do that because… and then the excuses begin to build.

But the more you get still and  listen the more that voice speaks to you in a way you can hear it.  Whether it’s a voice, or a body sensation, or some other clue you learn to recognize – to reach the potential of this superpower gift, you simply practice – just like you would do to get better at any skill.  And you stop arguing with it!  You learn to trust it.

The real potential is that you become a partner with this infinite intelligence.  You have easy access to your intuitive voice when problem solving and making decisions.  Your life becomes easier because you begin making more empowering decisions for your life not based on fear – you live with less regret of not listening to that voice – life begins to flow in a way you never thought possible.

Some suggestions to making your intuition work for you:

Be open to hearing it.  This means you make it clear that you will listen even if the answer sounds irrational. You can do this by asking, “what would I love?” What would I love in this situation?  What would I love the results of this decision to be?

Get still.  Detox from electronics when you are facing a problem you can’t seem to solve.  Be alone with your mind.  Meditate.  Color.  Iron clothes. Take a silent walk.  Do something that you don’t have to focus on as you do it so that your mind and thoughts may wander.

Release the need to know HOW.  Your intuition might tell you to go a certain way – and you may not totally understand how that way is going to help you.  You might not understand how this step is going to solve your problem. Do it anyway.  You know what you want – you don’t have to know how it will work before you take the step you know you should take.

Set aside your current conditions.  You may not think you can do what you know is the next step – what your intuition is guiding you to do.  I don’t have the money.  I don’t have the time.  You are in the middle of signing a major legal contract and others are waiting on you.  Do it anyway. When everything in you is telling you what to do – do it.   If your rational mind is saying “I can’t do that!” Ask yourself, “but what if I could?”  “What if I could do it?’  Then imagine you did it and how it turned out.  This will help you set aside your paradigms and fears.  What if I could?

You will build trust in your intuition the more you listen and follow it’s advice.  And soon it will be like hearing from your best friend.  Just beware – the ego will always try to keep you in your familiar current circumstances and will always have an opinion about why you can’t do what you know is the step to take.

Intuition is a human superpower that will lead you to great wisdom if you allow it.
